Compilation mod for Half-Life

Half-Life: Sum Mod is a free-to-use game utility from Forsete. It essentially consolidates other mods such as map packs to create an entirely new experience in the Half-Life universe. This custom campaign also revolves around the iconic Resonance Cascade, which set off most events in Half-Life (HL) and Half-Life 2 (HL2). You play as a tough-as-nails female HECU soldier across 11 full-level custom maps.

With an overall visual consistent with the base game and lore that could fit in with the rest of the franchise, Half-Life: Sum Mod is a good must-try, much like Half-Life : Out Of The Dark Mod.

Revisit a different Black Mesa

Half-Life: Sum Mod offers a different vantage point of the infamous Black Mesa Incident, triggered by the Resonance Cascade. These are parts of a chain of events where an extra dimensional crystal was reactivated at a lab, opening portals between Earth and an alien world. The soldiers sent to “clean up” after the invasion came from the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU), where your unnamed female character is a member.

Aside from an overall storyline that fits with the franchise, the maps are also something to marvel at. Taken from Forsete’s previous mods, the maps include new parts of the Black Mesa Research Facility. Granted, the levels themselves don’t feel too connected to each other individually and some parts have low-level texture details, but it lets you make up your own story of how it connects to the canon.

It’s worth noting that individually, the custom map mods work flawlessly. However, combining them together in this mod creates a certain set of optimization problems. From lagging right at the start to lagging during the use of night vision goggles, there’s a mix of consistent and intermittent problems affecting gameplay. Some of these problems can be fixed by running Xash3D, the open-source 3D engine used for HL mods.

An incentive to revisit Half-Life

With a female lead, a good selection of custom maps, and a story that can tie into the main franchise in more ways than one, Half-Life: Sum Mod is one of those custom content that feels new and familiar at the same time. It can use a couple more in-game textures, and a lot of help with the optimization, but it’s already fun and challenging as it is.

PROS

  • Use of a new, female lead
  • A story that can tie into the franchise
  • Features 11 custom maps

CONS

  • Some parts of the map remain unpolished
  • Optimization problems
